The Solos

2024

The Solos won a Fringe award and has been nominated for two Green Room awards.

Weave usually works as a close ensemble, but this time each of the six performers created a solo with a Director of their choice. Stories are on personal themes in either real or imagined worlds-fierce connection to place, poignant memory, universal anytime/everyman, absurdist encounters, dance from an imagined landscape.

Sense of Place is an exploration of the spaces and places in our hearts, minds, memories and everyday reality through physical theatre, soundscape, and visual projections.

Sense of Place – 1st Development

Dancehouse, Carlton North – Melbourne on 29 May 2022. This was a first stage creative development concerned with our human connection to place, bringing in the element of Sensory Theatre. How do we explore this connection through our five senses?

WANNA BE A RABBIT

2018 to 2022

Choreographed by Yumi Umiumare in collaboration with Weave Movement Theatre, the work moves between the surreal, absurd and mundane; humorously reversing perceptions of difference, exploring themes of status, power imposed and decomposed, where categories develop cracks and shatter. Based on a creative development in 2018 and 2019 with showings as short pieces in the ButohOUT!

RED THREAD

2020

This film was an artistic response to the long Covid19 lockdown in Melbourne. Artists were confined to their houses and zoom became the new tool to connect, collaborate and create. This film incorporates accessible self portraiture filming with iPhones, zoom recordings and graphics and editing by film-maker David Hansen. The video has accessible audio descriptions. This film was made possible by Creative Victoria.

MAPPING MELBOURNE FESTIVAL

An excerpt from ‘Wannabe A Rabbit- Part Two’ was performed at the Melbourne Museum on the 1st of December 2019 as part of the Mapping Melbourne Festival from Multicultural Arts Victoria.

BUTOHOUT! FORBIDDEN LAUGHTER SHOWCASE

2019

This performance showcase, directed by Yumi Umiumare, explored the theme ‘Forbidden Laughter’. The word for laughter in Japanese, warau笑う, comes from the verb wareru 割れる – to break, crack or split.

BUFFON PERFORMANCE

Buffon’, a modern style invented by French Theatre maker, Jaques Le Coque that has a main focus in the art of mockery.

The Dress rehearsal of the 2021 season of Wanna be a Rabbit, the night before the opening night when a lockdown closed down the season.

SHADOW PLAY AT ART PLAY

Weave led a very successful three day workshop for children at ArtPlay in central Melbourne on the theme of shadow play.

21 YEARS – A RETROSPECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

On October 24, 2018, Weave in partnership with photographer Paul Dunn and the City of Melbourne proudly presented ‘Weave Movement Theatre 21 Years: A Retrospective Photographic Exhibition’ at the City Library.

WHITE DAY DREAM

Is it really happening right in front of us, or are we daydreaming? White Day Dream was the 2016 creation from Weave Movement Theatre.

WILL YOU GO ROUND WITH ME?

Supported by the City of Melbourne, this short dance film, Will you go round with me? (2015) brings to life a suspended setting caught in the middle of comings and goings, where meetings, rendezvous and intimacies unfold.

A BROKEN PUZZLE FILM
